Breaking News: New Britain Police Captain Takes Own Life After DUI Arrest

New Britain Herald
The New Britain Herald is reporting that Captain Matthew Tuttle of the New Britain police department was found dead today at his Middletown home.  Reports indicated the 26 year veteran killed himself around 2 PM.   Apaprently Captain Tuttle was arrested the night before for allegedly driving under the influence and evading responsibility for an accident. Reports indicate no one was seriously injured.  Police eventually caught up to Tuttle after leaving the scene of the accident at around 12:44 AM.  The accident occurred on Route 9 in Berlin.

Tuttle served with distinction in the department's professional standards division.  He also served as an academy commander and instructor, and a special response team commander.   His death comes on the heels of another apparent officer suicide.  This past Thursday, Rocky Hill Police officers found the body of fellow officer Sgt. Leonard Kulas in his squad car.  Connecticut medical examiner's report that the death was the result of a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

As a practicing attorney in New Britain, I have had the opportunity to cross paths with Captain Tuttle. I always found him to be a professional, friendly and courteous officer. Growing up in Rocky Hill, I also have many fond memories of the Rocky Hill Police Department.  I send my condolences and prayers to the Tuttle and Kulas families and the New Britain and Rocky Hill Police Departments during this difficult time.

Studies have shown that while women will go to the physician and get a medication for depression, men go to the local bar or home liquor cabinet/refrigerator and self-medicate. It's amazing what a six-pack of beers, a pint of Jack, or a fifth of scotch will do to help smooth out a day's worth of trouble. Until it takes more than that-and a set of car keys-and.....

Depression is a disease, guys. It is NOT a weakness or failing. It is like having high cholesterol, diabetes, or anything else. It needs medication. GO GET HELP. Guess what? You won't be a drug addict-things will just be better!

Captain Tuttle is a big loss to the New Britain department. He must have problems at home or in the family that lead to his suicide. I don't think it was related to his DUI arrest. Being a veteran for more than two decades, I still believe he's professional about what happened.

New Britain just lost a distinguished police officer and father. Captain Matthew Tuttle's apparent suicide left a void in the town's police leadership.
